Organizing a Small Closet

Something that I like to do every couple months is clean out my closet. I feel like it helps me to see what articles of clothing I am actually wearing and what I haven't touched in years. My closet is relatively small which makes organizing all of my clothes a little challenging. I like to keep my closet as clean as possible because I think it makes getting dressed more fun and a lot less stressful.
Whenever I do a full closet clean, I reorganize everything. The first thing I always focus on is jeans. I like to hang my jeans, so I can see each and every pair. I personally think it's a lot easier to find a specific pair of jeans when I can see all of my options hanging before me. I put two pairs on jeans on each hanger and I separate them by style and color. This not only makes my closet look neat, but also creates room on my shelves to fold other pieces of clothing.
Other things that I like to hang in my closet are dresses, skirts, and my cuter shirts. The dresses are in the back of my closet right now because it is too cold for them and mixed with the dresses are jumpsuits and skirts. Right in the middle of my closet is all of my cute tops. I have tank tops and t shirts separated but right next to each other hanging on my top row, since it is still cold outside, and the long sleeve tops and flannels hanging on the bottom so they're easier to reach. All my tops that are hanging are color coded because I think it looks more tidy and also makes a small closet look a little bigger.
Sweatshirts are the part of my wardrobe that I move around in my closet the most. Sometimes they are folded up on a higher shelf, and sometimes they are hanging. Right now, I have my sweatshirts hanging on my bottom row right next to sweatpants. Both are hanging because I think that they take up a lot less room hanging rather than being folded. Shelf space in a smaller closet is limited, so where I put everything really makes a difference. By hanging sweatshirts and sweatpants I am able to create a lot more shelf room.
I don't have a ton of shelves in my closet. One I have dedicated to sweaters, and the other for my going out bodysuits and tops. My solution for creating more room for folding clothes is to buy a hanging shelf. I bought one when I went to college and then eventually started using it in my closet at home because it created so much more room in my closet. I have 6 rows in my hanging shelving unit where I store leggings, casual tanks, tees, and long sleeves, and lightweight sweatshirts. This hanging shelf has even the biggest game changer for my closet because I don't feel like my closet is overflowing anymore.
Shoes are something that you can never have too many of, even if you have a small closet and can't seem to fit them all. My solution for fitting a ton of shoes into your closet is to buy some sort of shoe shelving unit. I have a shoe cube unit which holds 15 pairs and fits underneath where my jeans are hung. In addition to the shoe cube, I have two rows of shoes and bins underneath my bed for shoes that I don't wear very often like heels.
Organizing a closet can feel like a daunting task, especially when you don't have a ton of room to begin with, but there are always solutions that will help clear up some space. They key is to first clean out what you never wear and then work from there to create the most amount of space you can!
