I draw a lot of inspiration from my closet. When I don't know what to write a blog about I look in my closet. When I see a really cool style on Instagram or Pinterest, I immediately go to my closet to see if I can copy it. So how my closet is organized is super important to me. I usually refresh my closet about once a year- move things around, reorganize, overall clean it up. Whenever I give my closet a refresh, I suddenly feel inspired, creative, and ready to tackle new outfits. That's why I want to give you some tips and tricks for how to refresh your closet, so maybe you will feel inspired in your outfits as well as your life too!
Tip #1: Know What to Fold and What to Hang
This might seem like a no brainer, but your closet won't feel refreshed and clean if your clothes are all wrinkly or stretched out because you aren't taking proper care of your pieces. Sometimes it's hard to know what should be hung or folded. I have hung, then folded, then rehung the same piece time and time again. But there are some general guidelines that might help your closet look better, but also keep your clothes lasting longer! Things that should pretty much always be folded in your closet: sweaters, cardigans, and casual tee's. The sweaters and cardigans are recommended to fold so that you don't stretch them out. Casual tee's can get stretched out and funky at the neck sometimes too.
Trick:
If you want to something hanging in your closet that should be folded so that it doesn't get ruined, you can fold it over a hanger. This way it's still hanging, but it won't stretch out and get ruined!
Tip #2: Make Shoes Easily Accessible
I don't know about you, but shoes are my favorite part of any outfit. That's why moving shoes to somewhere that you can see them all makes your closet feel fresh, inspiring, and completely different. I like to move my shoes around every season, so that all the shoes for the season are directly in front. Seeing what shoes I have for fall, for example, sometimes helps me think of new, different, and creative ways to style things using those shoes. Moving shoes around seems really small and like it won't make a difference, but when you change things around it really does feel refreshed. Seeing different pairs of shoes also allows you to appreciate everything you have, and gives new ideas!
Trick:
If you don't have enough room in your closet to move your shoes seasonally, I recommend getting storage for out of season shoes. When you do this, each season when you switch your shoes around, you feel like you're getting brand new shoes because you forgot what you have!
Tip #3: Rotate Your Clothes
This one is similar to shoes, but at the same time totally different. When I say rotate, I mean move things around in your closet. This can mean moving things to different places based on the season, or even just organizing one section of clothes different. By rearranging your clothes, your closet will look totally different, and will give you new ideas for outfits. Doing this is also super useful because you rediscover pieces that you forgot you had, and you also find things that you haven't worn in years. It's all about making the most of your space and allowing the closet to feel new and exciting. Changing your clothes around forces you to use different pieces and get creative!
Trick:
Start by just moving your tops around. My pants are hung in one spot and don't really move unless I am arranging them by wash or style. My tops move around based on season, so I can see what I have, and also use pieces in new ways. Moving clothes totally keeps things exciting and fresh!
Tip #4: Move Things That You Want to Wear Right in Front
The easiest way to ensure you are wearing your favorite pieces or trying new outfits, is by making sure you can see the pieces. Sometimes when we are refreshing our wardrobe, we move a super loved item out of sight. Then suddenly, you don't wear that item anymore because you forgot about it. The very front and center of your closet is the first place you look when trying to pick out an outfit. If you keep your favorite pieces here you will wear them more. Keeping newer/ funky/ exciting pieces here also reminds you to wear them more often! Get creative and use old pieces in a new way!
Trick:
Swap out the items that you keep in this front section. This way, you don't only wear the same 4 shirts over and over. It also keeps you on your toes, and challenges you to look at your closet in a new way to create outfits with new pieces.
I hope this is helpful! Moving things around in your closet really does allow it to feel fresh. I love having new ideas and opportunity to wear things that I forgot I had! Let me know what other kinds of posts you want to see this month!
